Proverbs 31: A NEW TAKE

The other night at dinner my husband asked me, “Do you believe you are where God called you to be?” It is a question that we ask each other often to hold each other accountable in making sure we are doing what God called us to do in all aspects of our lives. It is this question that I believe we should all ask ourselves and when we can answer it we can then start to become a Proverbs 31 woman. But what is a Proverbs 31 woman?

We have all read and heard many teachings on Proverbs 31. As Christian women, we’ve been taught to strive to be a Proverbs 31 woman.
We become engaged and immediately study up on the Proverbs 31 woman and take note on how she is as a wife. We start a family and we restudy how perfect of a mother the Proverbs 31 woman is.
I mean come on, the woman was pretty legit! She found wool and flax and spun it for clothes. She found food for her family. She would wake up BEFORE dawn to make a beautiful breakfast for her family AND plan her to do list for her and her servant girls….BEFORE dawn. (I have a hard time waking up at 8!) She bought land and made vineyards.  She did all of this and still found the time to help the poor and needy.
Y’all, I don’t know about you, but when I read this I feel like I just read a list of impossible tasks. This verse was taught to me in a way that made me feel like if I did not measure up to Miss Proverbs 31, I would be less than a woman, wife, and mother. “Do this and you will be a capable wife!”. So wait, if I don’t do this you are saying that I won’t be a capable wife?

It was not until recently that I realized God’s heart in this passage. I went through the beginning of my marriage feeling like I failed my husband.  I wasn’t waking up before dawn to make him breakfast before he had to go to work. There were nights that I was so tired from work that I didn’t make dinner.  I wasn’t getting pregnant in our time frame and felt like I was failing as a woman and a wife because I wasn’t giving my husband children right away. It was emotionally taxing and became physically taxing trying so hard to measure up to this woman we’ve heard so much about.

I began to dive more into studying Proverbs 31 and came across some things that caused my heart to change when it came to womanhood, being a wife, and a mommy. I began to be encouraged and uplifted. And I pray that you are too!
Through my studying I came to find that in Jewish culture the MEN are called to memorize Proverbs 31. I mean, to me, that makes total sense. The passage is ABOUT women but it is ADDRESSED to men! They memorize this passage and they sing it as a song of PRAISE to the women in their life. It is a song of encouragement and love, appreciation and praise!

Proverbs 31:10 says, “A virtuous woman who can find?” another word for virtuous is VALOR. “A woman of valor who can find?” This verse sets the tone for the entire passage. This whole passage is about a virtuous woman. A woman of valor. Valor isn’t about WHAT you do but HOW you do it! Different synonyms for valor are: BRAVERY, COURAGE, FEARLESSNESS, BOLDNESS, DAUNTLESSNESS. These are all words that describe HOW something is done.

In all the Bible only TWO women were referred to as virtuous. The Proverbs 31 woman and Ruth. When you look at these women their lives are VERY DIFFERENT but they were both deemed women of VALOR.

The Proverbs 31 woman was established. She was married. She had children. She served her household as a stay at home wife and mom (you can say). She planted and harvested food

Ruth on the other hand was a widow. She had no children (at the time when she was referred to as virtuous Ruth 3:11) She was a servant to Boaz. She was a wanderer with her mother-in-law, Naomi.
But she was loyal like no other. “Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!” (Ruth 1:16-17). Talk about a ride or die chic! She was diligent. ““Let me go out into the harvest fields to pick up the stalks of grain left behind by anyone who is kind enough to let me do it.” (Ruth 2:2). She was strong and  brave. She knew that she could have been treated poorly and harassed if she went into someone’s field to gather grain and barley for her and Naomi, yet she did it anyway! (Ruth 2). She was determined. She stayed with Boaz and his servant girls until the harvest was over. Everyday she would follow behind his harvesters and collect crops that she would bring back to Naomi. She was a woman of immense faith. Her husband died and her future was unknown but what she did know was that God was good and He already had her future mapped out all she needed to do was obey. You see, it wasn’t what Ruth did that made her a virtuous woman BUT how she did what she did that made her virtuous.

The Proverbs 31 woman and Ruth had very different lives. Their roles did not look the same but they were both virtuous. They both ran the race God placed before them with valor.
You see, Proverbs 31 is not a checklist for how well you are doing as a woman, wife, and/or mommy. It’s an example of how to be virtuous in the role God placed us in.
Whether you are a stay at home mom, a Doctor, a teacher, a business professional, a waitress, a student, etc you are measuring up! You are right where you need to be and you are doing exactly enough because you are where God called you to be! You are running YOUR race with valor. You are a virtuous woman!

A WOMAN OF MEEK STRENGTH

I am a loud person. I'm in your face and bold which has been a blessing in my life and at times a bad thing because I have not been one to always take correction quietly. My mom and husband have always told me "you DO NOT have to get the last word in!" So when I read 1 Peter 3:4, "You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God" I thought UH OH! God finds a gentle and quiet spirit precious? But uh God, I am not the most quiet person. Does this not make me beautiful and precious? Is that unattractive?

It's easy to take the part that says "quiet & gentle" and think it's a physical thing. But in actuality it's talking about being meek. The more I read about being quiet and gentle the more I realized how much strength it takes to submit myself and learn to be quiet and gentle. The more I realized how much more God can use me when I am meek.

Look at Moses. Numbers 12:3 tells us that Moses was extremely humble, the MOST humble man in all the earth. God specifically chose Moses to lead the Israelites from captivity in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land. Moses is also referred to as the giver of the Law because God used him to scribe the Ten Commandments. Also, Moses is the principal author of the Pentateuch, the foundational books of the entire Bible! Because Moses was meek and humble and not full of himself, there was plenty of room for God to work and use him to change the world for generations to come!

The greatest explain of meekness was Jesus Christ! The MOST powerful, influential, breathtaking, Savior of all mankind was MEEK! Matthew 11:29 says, "Place my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble..."
Think of all that Jesus did. He healed the sick, walked on water, raised the dead, etc He was the most powerful person to ever walk this earth. When he was arrested and mocked, spit on, stabbed, stripped naked, and crucified think of what he could have done. He could have ordered all powers in heaven to destroy his betrayers. But he didn't. He said, "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). He humbled himself to his Father's plan and died a brutal sinners death.

Y'all, meekness is not a sign of weakness.

Being meek was once described as such:  "To be meek does not mean to be weak. A horse, before it is tamed, is strong but, being wild, is useless to man. After being tamed it does not lose its strength. It just becomes tamed, controlled and useful. A good definition for meekness is "strength under control".

The reason God finds a quiet and gentle spirit precious is because it is when we are meek that He can work through us in mighty ways.

I love my husband beyond words could ever describe. I want to be meek so I can be the best wife I can be for him. I want to be meek so I can continue to submit to his authority with joy. I want to be meek so I can be used by God to bless my husband in God given ways. I want to be meek so our marriage can be all God intended it to be. If I'm not meek my flesh will try to operate under the curse and I will try to rule over my husband (Genesis 3:16) which is not Gods desire.
I want to be meek for my precious son. I want him to see what it looks like to be submissive so he takes correction with joy. I want to be meek so he knows what it looks like to be humble because I believe that is the most admirable characteristic anyone especially a strong man, can have. I want to be meek so Otis sees the joy of being used by God in powerful ways.

You see, meekness was a trait Jesus so beautifully displayed and we are called to be Christ like (1 John 2:6, 1 Corinthians 11:1, Ephesians 5:1-2, Galatians 3:27).

Having a quiet and gentle spirit does not mean you can't still be loud, outgoing, fun & crazy. It simply means you understand the importance of being submissive, obedient, humble, and at peace. It means you are meek which is an incredible testament to strength!

I urge you, if you are one to always get the last word in, have trouble taking correction, are ruled by pride, have trouble submitting to authority; ask God to forgive you. I just had to do this today! It's not always easy to be meek but the more we desire to be like Christ the easier it will become a natural characteristic we desire to embody!
Your marriage depends on your meek heart. Who your children will become depend on your meek heart. The works you do for The Kingdom of God depend on being meek.
Let's be MEEK strong and mighty women!

REST verb; cease work or movement in order to relax, refresh oneself, or recover strength

I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time when it comes to slowing down and resting. I am normally always on the go whether it be stuff for my small business, errands, chores, visiting friends, etc. I find that I don’t get to really relax until 10 at night when my husband comes home and even then I normally get a plate together for him and start cleaning up from the days activities.

Now these are things that I choose to do. No one makes me. I mean our house would probably fall apart if I didn’t do most of them haha but still my husband is capable of doing the things I do. He’s at work 10-10 so it isn’t that realistic but the point is I DO NOT NEED TO TAKE ON THE LOAD ALL BY MYSELF. I choose to. I choose to exhaust myself most days. I choose to get frustrated. I choose to feel like there is never enough time. I choose to not take a nap and drain myself.
Y’all, I have so been a Martha most of the time! Ugh, I don’t like admitting that, but it’s so true and my family has been affected by my Martha ways.

Who the heck is this Martha, you ask? Well there is a story about two sisters who had the pleasure of spending time with Jesus. Well really, one of them had the pleasure of spending time with Jesus.
When Jesus was welcomed into their home, Martha started to get flustered and started preparing a huge dinner for them to eat. If she is like me she was probably cooking something that ended up in creating a MASSIVE pile of dishes making even more work for herself.
Mary on the other hand was just hanging out with Jesus and listening to all he had to say. She was soaking in his presence and enjoying her time with him. This PISSED Martha off. Shoot, I would be pissed if I was having company over and I am making this huge meal while my sister sits on the couch and doesn’t even offer to help. Martha ran to Jesus and whined, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me” (Luke 10:40). But Jesus thought otherwise. He said, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41,42)
OH SNAP! You tell her Jesus! Wait, I am Martha though….I normally worry and get upset over all the little details. I am always on the go, go, go.

Recently I had multiple occasions where it hit me hard that I need to stop being a Martha.

We were having company over and I was getting dinner ready. I was making salmon that took 2 hours to marinate and another hour to cook. I was making sides to go with it and dessert. The kitchen was becoming a mess piled with dishes as high as Mt. Everest. I kept looking at the time and seeing that things were not going to be ready on time and I still needed to straighten up the house. My husband asked me a question and I snapped at him. He said, “we need to stop having people over. This happens every time. You become overwhelmed and concerned with the simplest things.” Well dang babe, thanks. Clearly that is not something I wanted to hear at the time, but Brent was 100% right. I was a mess. I wanted everything to be perfect and it felt like no matter what I did, my efforts were not going to be enough (like my first post!). If Knew I was going to get overwhelmed why couldn’t I just order a pizza? Why not spend that time I was using to cook to relax instead and be at peace before company arrived. When it comes down to it, I much rather enjoy my time with company than have left over frustration residing within me during our time of fellowship, hindering myself from being open to blessing God had planned during our time together.

Another time I was a Martha it broke me. Otis has been teething. He goes to bed earlier now which means he wakes a little earlier in the morning. Y’all I have been spoiled up to this point. Otis would sleep in until 9 sometimes 10! Can I get a HALLELUJAH?! But now he has been waking around 7/7:30. The other morning I got snappy because of my sons actions. My little 5 month old who is innocent and doesn’t think anything of waking up at 7 am. He woke up and I picked him up and started talking to myself, “well great I guess my day has started! Thanks Otis for waking up so early. I DO NOT want to be up this early.” I started banging things around in the family room (not violently, but making more noise than needed just to be dramatic). But why was I so frustrated with that? 7:30 really isn’t that early. I used to be out the door for work at 6 when I was nannying. It was frustrating because I didn’t get enough sleep the night before. Because I didn't get to sleep in. Otis goes to bed around 7/8 but I stay up to do dishes and get the house in order so when Brent gets home from work he is welcomed by a clean and tidy home. I could spend the time relaxing and going to bed earlier but instead I stay up late and concern myself with things that can get done the next day. I sat on the couch that night and cried. I felt horrible for how I acted in the morning towards my child. Otis didn’t realize how I was feeling but one day when he is older he will be able to pick up on those things. He will be able to know when I am frustrated and annoyed and that is something I never want my child to see in me. I asked God to forgive me for getting in the flesh and being selfish. From that day on I told myself, If the dishes aren’t done by the time Otis goes to bed they can get done in the morning. If I don’t go to sleep when he does I make myself sit on the couch and unwind with my TV show. I leave all the housework because lets be real, it isn’t going anywhere. It will be there tomorrow. Me relaxing and resting causes me to be a better mommy to Otis. When I don’t I am on edge and get frustrated with the littlest things.

Another Martha moment….gosh I feel like I can give examples for days. Like I previously said I am normally go, go, go. Crazy right, a stay at home mom does more than stay at home lol. But a lot of the things that I am doing are not priorities. They are things that can get done at another time. I love doing home projects. When Otis naps I can usually be found painting something, making something, designing something etc. But I have noticed how much energy it takes to get it done when I can be resting while he naps. Instead I do work. When I do work, I get even more tired. Then when my husband gets home I am exhausted and don’t want to stay up with him so I go to bed. I was missing quality time with my husband because I was too tired from all the EXTRA things I decided to take on that day. Y’all I don’t get to see my husband that much during the week. We don’t have the luxury of a 9-5 job like most families. He is gone from 10am-10pm. We miss afternoons together and dinner as a family. So when he gets home at night we have a chance to relax together and catch up. But because I would chose to exhaust myself during the day we would miss those moments together because I was grumpy and tired. Now I force myself to nap or lay down at least one time when Otis does and it has made a HUGE difference! When Brent gets home we sit together, talk about our day, watch a movie…we enjoy each other’s presence.

We read more about Martha and Mary in John 11 and again in Mark 14. While in Bethany Mary broke out an alabaster jar of expensive perfume and poured it over Jesus’ head. People who were gathered around were perplexed at Mary’s actions. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked.  “It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly. But Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me? You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time. I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed” (Mark 14:4-9)
We see two things here. One, the other people were so concerned with other things that when something happened against what they would have wanted to do they "scolded her HARSHLY. They got frustrated and in the flesh instead of enjoying being with Jesus and being blessed by his presence. Two, we see how Mary could have concerned herself like her peers and only be focused on all the poor people who could have been helped by that jar. But Jesus so beautifully reminded them that the poor were not going anywhere.
Friends, those dishes aren’t going anywhere. That pile of laundry isn’t gong anywhere. That home project isn’t going anywhere. That yard work isn’t going anywhere. But your time? That is going somewhere. It is counting down. Don’t waste it being concerned about the little things. Spend it doing things that will be remembered and discussed for years to come.

I want Otis to grow up telling me stories about things he remembers doing with me everyday. I don’t want him to look back on his childhood and remember me being frustrated and overwhelmed and busy all the time. I want him to know he will always be my top  priority. That I will always choose him.
I want my husband and I to grow old together and talk about all the adventures we went on and the legacy we built. Not the fights we got into because I’m overwhelmed and overtired from always being on the go.

Sisters, lets be a Mary. Lets put things that can be put on hold, ON HOLD! Lets learn to rest and enjoy the moments Jesus placed in front of us. That is the only way you will prosper and enjoy the goodness and fullness God desires you to experience. It is not to late to turn from your Martha ways and begin anew!

YOU ARE ENOUGH

Why do we as women have such a hard time when it comes to trusting that we are enough? Why do we struggle with insecurity? I don’t know about you but it’s a question that often pops into my head.
Am I good enough?
Am I pretty enough?
Am I skinny enough?
Am I enough for my husband?
Am I enough when it comes to accomplishing all God has placed before me?
Am I a good enough wife?
Am I a good enough mommy?
I cannot help but think I am lacking in more than one way. BUT WHY?
My husband tells me daily how much he loves me, how beautiful I am and that Otis is so lucky to have me as his mommy. He expresses his gratitude to me and all I do. So WHY do I still struggle?

It goes back to Eve. We all know the story of Adam and Eve. We’ve been told it since Sunday school. But it wasn’t until I re-read Genesis 3 that I realized how much my heart reflected the heart of Eve.

God created the earth and filled it with every beautiful thing imaginable and He gave it all to us because He deemed us as worthy to care for His creation (Genesis 1). He knew that although we weren’t perfect we were enough because we were created in His image and likeness. But things went south in Genesis 3.
God told Adam and Eve that they were welcome to eat of every tree in the garden EXCEPT the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The serpent whispered to the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from ANY of the trees in the garden?” Eve replied, “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’” “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman.  “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.” THE WOMAN WAS CONVINCED. What was she convinced of? She was convinced that she could not trust God. She was convinced that she was not enough and needed to take matters into her own hands in order to be BETTER, to be like God so she could become enough. It was her insecurity that drove her to sin.
No matter how much my husband tells me I am enough.  No matter how often he tells me I am beautiful, I am sexy and extravagant there is still a part of my heart that believes the opposite. No matter how much I love on and cuddle Otis, no matter how much I put him first there is still a part of my heart that thinks I am failing as a mom. No matter how much I speak my husbands love language, serve him, keep up our house, I still feel like I am not a good wife. I cannot help but doubt that I am enough.
But you know what? God put it best when he said:
I have called you by name; you are mine.
When you go through deep waters,
    I will be with you.
When you go through rivers of difficulty,
    you will not drown.
When you walk through the fire of oppression,
    you will not be burned up;
the flames will not consume you.
For I am the Lord, your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
I gave Egypt as a ransom for your freedom;
I gave Ethiopia[a] and Seba in your place.
Others were given in exchange for you.
I traded their lives for yours
because you are precious to me.
You are honored, and I love you.”
Isaiah 43:2-4

Y’all the Creator of every beautiful thing thinks I am enough. He thinks you are enough. He thinks we are precious and He loves us. Every imperfect thing within us He finds wildly beautiful. He knew we would go through difficult times, He knew we would face oppression and feel less than but He said from the beginning of time “can’t you see, if I didn’t think you were enough I would have never wasted my time creating every living and non living thing for you. If I didn’t think you were enough I would have never sent my Son to die for you just so I could bring you back to me. I am passionately in love with YOU. Not your acts. Not your looks. Not how you are as a wife or mom. I am passionately in love with you, all of you! Believe me when I say, I love YOU my sweet precious daughter.”

Because of the fall we were cursed, but because of our Savior Jesus Christ we have redeemed from the curse (Galatians 3:13). So wife, mommy, sister in Christ; you can either believe the lie that is attached to the curse OR you can believe the truth that is attached to the blood of Christ that screams YOU ARE ENOUGH.

The enemy will always try to whisper lies to you. He loves when you are insecure because when you are insecure your walls are down and you are vulnerable to other attacks. As long as you are living he will constantly try to convince you that you aren’t enough and that God doesn’t love you. He will try to make you believe that your husband wants more, that your baby deserves better, that God doesn’t have a good plan for you but resist those lies! Stand tall, fix that beautiful crown that God placed upon your head and strut your stuff! You, my beautiful sister, will ALWAYS be enough!
